The basis of 33 Lights is recordings of the faint sounds of fluorescent strip lights being switched on. I chose to incorporate chance into the process of structuring the piece, combining that with the random rhythms of the lights starting up. I drew the cards until the combination that I liked the most materialised, and the piece was then complete.
The result is an imaginary soundscape created by the various durations of sounds of the lights coming on.
